Zen Astrology
Here’s a take for ya:
Astrology is a technique for quieting thoughts about self.
(Obviously, human beings frequently misuse tools.)
Astrological descriptions are incredibly dense with meaning. Something I’m finding is that it’s easier to speak in shorthand because unpacking it is so difficult, especially for a beginner.
That’s because it’s dense, but also because it’s incredibly subtle, which just takes experience to convey artfully. And the art clearly includes communicating it to someone else, which is probably a limiting factor on who can be a “good” practicing astrologer.
Such an integral part of that experience is doing it on oneself. And learning to unpack astrological information and have it MEAN something is so bound up in going THROUGH it. It’s feeling-powered. And so you learn to identify feelings with it and describe them CONCISELY.
You don’t have to be “an astrologer” to do that, though, either. You don’t have to be able to communicate it. You can think in this language, spatially, visually, somatically. It’s all moving bodies. You don’t have to write or even chart. Act it out.
And it’s not just a full-spectrum language in your mind, either! The LITERAL SKY is speaking the language AND doing the dance! And the weather and the daylight and so therefore all the plants and animals and other people… The world is IN this language, you understand. It’s LIFE.
But what I’m trying to point out is, if you learn that language, you can say or think,
“☽ □ ♃”
and identify such a PARTICULAR and DELICATE feeling — one you know well, and which you could write a thousand words about and fail to explain it.
Because you CAN’T explain it.
Why wonder obsessively what tumultuous inner state you’re going through?
Why try to walk through some crude cognitive simulation of some scenario and try to resolve it emotionally through sheer force of will?
Why not just let the sky explain it? Let it be part of the world?
Endless unfolding of geometries between Heavenly Bodies and Earthly Bodies without understanding.
Without imposing.
Without resisting
Without hesitating.
Without past or future.
Without -logy. Being space.
