Religious Takes Are Quaint Now

The reason I kind of stopped posting religion takes is because I could tell something was happening to them, and now it’s happened, and I know what it is, which is that they’re quaint now.

Ideas about religion don’t have any purchase in this terrain. Not anymore. It’s just like, ok, whatever, either do stuff with people or don’t, whichever prepares you for this almost completely unrecognizable set of circumstances, probably the former, not really the point.

Like sure, speak the language to help you coordinate, we need that pretty badly, but the second your precious ✌️“beliefs”✌️ start to derail the work, you’re dead weight. You’re freeloading. No one wants to carry your load while your hands are empty and gesticulating.

And it was one thing when it still felt like those descriptions of reality had any kind of cultural purchase on the PRESENT, let alone the future. Now we’re just fresh out of precedent. Religious language can find collaborators using PAST-facing cultural signals, but what else?

And like, I think that’s GOOD, I spend most of my IRL hangout time with Jewish people and people who love Jewish people doing Jewish things together for Jewish reasons, but is it ✌️“religion”✌️? That’s like a foreign concept to me. We’re being HOLY and REAL, does that count?

Actually, that wasn’t a question. Don’t answer that. Whether or not you think it counts is exactly the religious take I’m talking about. Nothing could be less relevant or interesting. We’re a bunch of Jewish people trying to live in this century, and it’s what we do. Period.

The madder you get about it, the more caught up in some human cognitive artifice you get, the further from reality you stray. The further from God.

Look up from your books.
