Finding God

I really hope nothing I say sounds to anyone the way the American Christian imperative “find God” sounds.

In fact, I never realized how precisely this phrase opposes everything I stand for.

“Finding God” is the optional last step that becomes available at the end of a long road of relationship-building with contingent and finite beings. That is all I am ever imploring people to do.

“Find God!” as though you can do that all by yourself, and that if you could, you would bother doing anything else after.
