Closed Practice

The phrase “closed practice” just doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface of the problem to which it refers.

It’s a choice example of the kind of neologism the internet has to coin when it treats spirituality as a mediated content space that can be navigated with nothing but transactional social intelligence.

“Ope! Hold up! Can’t meme on that topic. It’s closed.”

The brainworm manifest in that kind of thinking actually operates far below the level of any extractive entitlement to other people’s culture.

It’s the very belief that descriptions of some foreign cultural behavior provide access to that behavior in the first place.

The issue is not any kind of ✌️“authentic”✌️ hijacking of a practice, as though an imitation based on description alone has any impact on that practice.

It’s that you’re dressing up a bag of your nasty demons in the costume of some people, creating perceptions of those people.

I’m afraid the issue with your mangling of other cultures’ sacred languages in service of your lil ritual is not that you are accessing the arcane powers of that culture without permission.

It’s just that you’re summoning the regular old demon known as…

🌈👋 𝓇𝒶𝒸𝒾𝓈𝓂 👋🌈

Which, let me be perfectly clear:

That is not to say you haven’t done something royally fucked up on a spiritual level.

Just don’t be putting that on the fearsome virile magic of whatever culture you fetishized. It’s YOUR thing. YOU unmake it.
